H.E Khov Meas to Attend the National Workshop on the Inclusion of Prek Tal as the Fourth Ramsar Region

On 18 May 2015, H.E Khov Meas, Deputy Secretary General of Tonle Sap Authority, attended the National Workshop on the Inclusion of the Core Area Prek Toal as the Fourth Ramsar Region of  Cambodia, organized by the Ministry of Environment under the auspice of H.E Yin Kim Sean,  Secretary of State of the Ministry of Environment. The workshop raised the criteria of Ramsar region and wetland in Cambodia that have the potential for the inclusion as Ramsar Region. Cambodia joined as a full member of the Ramsar Convention on 23 October 1996 and included 3 major wetlands as Ramsar Regions; they are (1) Mekong bank of Steung Treng province (2) Kapi island of Koh Kong province, and (3) Tonle Chmar of Kampong Thom province. By seeing the potential of Prek Toal as the core area of biosphere of Tonle Sap Lake and as the only bird's breeding area in Southeast Asian region and the compatibility to the requirements of Ramsar Convention, the workshop agreed to include Prek Toal as the fourth Ramsar Region of Cambodia. The working group will prepare requesting documents and submit them to the Council of Ministers and head of the government.
